The Michelin Guide's review
Timanfaya National Park encompasses a massif that was formed by the volcanic eruptions of 1730-1736 and 1824. The colour of the landscape varies with hues of red to black. In the centre are the Mountains of Fire (Montañas de Fuego), whose depths remain active, just as they do at Islote de Hilario, where the temperature of the subsoil is so high that a twig dropped into a hole will immediately catch fire! Opt for a coach trip along the volcano road then continue south towards the magnificent, multicoloured sight of the immense Janubios saltpans!
