The Michelin Guide's review
Gunung Bromo, the last active volcano of the Tengger Caldera, is also the most famous, despite being the smallest (2 392m). Steep steps lead up to the crest of the caldera, an infernal mouth noisily wheezing out a thick white cloud smelling of sulphur. The Tenggers throw in offerings at the Kasada ceremony, which attracts almost 200 000 pilgrims every year. Walk around the edge of the crater (approximately 1hr) for an extraordinary panorama of the caldera and the other volcanoes.
