The Michelin Guide's review
The best place to watch the sun coming up over the Tengger Caldera and its three volcanic cones is Gunung Penanjakan, the highest volcano on the site (2 770m), which stands at the western edge of the caldera. After a short section crossing the sea of sand, totally invisible in the half-light and the mist, the road snakes up the cliffside to the summit, where you can await the dawn spectacle of blue-grey, then pink, orange, scarlet... the caldera dons a kaleidoscope of colours as it is slowly unveiled by the rising sun.
