The Michelin Guide's review
This 16km-long lake, equally popular with sailors and water skiers, is pleasantly surrounded by woods and hills. Boat trips round the lake enable visitors to admire the unspoilt west bank, as well as the manly islets, including Belle Isle. The town of Windermere and the picturesque village of Bowness-on-Windermere, known for its promenade skirting the bay, are both located on the east bank. A ferry carries cars and passengers across the lake to Sawrey.
