The Michelin Guide's review
The cathedral stands on the site of the former Saxon cathedral from the 7C, the foundations of which were discovered around 1960. William Walkelyn, appointed bishop by William I, began building the new cathedral in 1079. Built mainly from stone from the Isle of Wight, Europe's longest Gothic cathedral (169m) took its definitive shape in 1528.
