The Michelin Guide's review
Tucked away on the forested banks of the Brandywine River, the granite buildings of this factory were founded in 1802 by French chemist Eleuthère Irénée Du Pont de Nemours (1771-1834). The hamlet of Hagley thus gave rise to the Du Pont Company, the top dog of the chemical industry. In the park, mills, hydraulic wheels and machine shops reconstruct the workers' tasks. The imposing Eleutherian Mills on the hill upstream of the factory was the residence of the Du Pont de Nemours family from 1803 to 1890.
