Church of Wieuwerd
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This modest church boasts a somewhat strange crypt. Built in the 14C, it was subsequently used as a tomb for eleven people in the 17C and 18C. The bodies were preserved from decomposition by an "antimonious" gas which came out of the ground: four of the mummies are exhibited beneath a sheet of glass. To illustrate this phenomenon, several birds, including a parakeet, can be seen hanging from the ceiling.
