Inspired by the Palace of Versailles, Josef I wanted a residence that was in keeping with his vast empire. His successors continued to work on Schönbrunn Castle and the place lives up to his original ambition. Everything has a grandiose symmetry and the reception rooms, galleries and apartments still retain their original decoration. The park, with its gardens, flower-filled parterres, fountains and sculptures, has plenty of attractions in store for children.
