The Michelin Guide's review
Vienna owes the palaces of the Belvedere to a general, Eugene of Savoy. Returning victorious after campaigns against the Turks and Louis XIV as a prince, he commissioned the finest Baroque ensemble in Vienna. The two palaces, built between 1716 and 1722 opposite each other, are linked by a formal garden overlooking the city. The Lower Belvedere houses themed exhibitions and the medieval treasure; the Upper Belvedere is home to art collections from the Middle Ages to the 20C.
