Emperor Maximilian I, the "last knight", died here in 1519. Today, the restored Burg Wels houses various museums: the Town Museum (Stadtmuseum), dedicated to its history, and which presents a remarkable Biedermeier collection; the Agriculture Museum (Landwirtschaftmuseum), the theme of which is "The Peasant's Year"; the Austrian Bakery Museum (Gebäckmuseum), which is the only one of its kind; and the Museum of Displaced Populations (Museum der Heimatvertriebenen).
