From afar, as you leave the forest path to the site, Buduruvegala looks like a sleeping elephant. It is in fact a boulder from which seven characters were carved out of the rockface in the 8-10C: in the centre is a giant effigy (15m/50ft) of Buddha, with on either side, three Colossuses carrying his headdress.
