Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Situated along the cherry tree promenade along the shore of the Tidal Basin, this monument (1997) pays homage to the man who presided over the fate of the country from 1933 to 1945. Open-air spaces, compartmentalised within red-granite walls, chart the determination of the 32nd president to overcome the huge challenges of this turbulent time. A statue of his wife, Eleanor, is a reminder of the important role played by the First Lady, in particular in the creation of the UN.
