  The Michelin Guide's review
El-Baramous Monastery or Monastery of the Romans was probably the first to be founded in Wadi el-Natroun. It is thought that St Macarius established it around 330. The Church of the Virgin Mary, dating from the 9C and 11C, is based on the sanctuary of the Monastery of the Syrians. The fine frescoes (13C-14C) in the central nave depict, from east to west: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Baptism of Christ, the Wedding Feast at Cana, and the Entry of Christ into Jerusalem.
