The Michelin Guide's review
Both a monumental triumphal arch and a bastion, the Golden Gate (12C) once gave access to the fortified city which had four other gates. Andrei Bogolyubski, who made Vladimir the capital of his principality, wanted it to be majestic and worthy of his town's new status. A unique testament to medieval military art, it also houses a Museum of Military History.
