The Michelin Guide's review
The former Orval Abbey was ruined in 1793. In 1926, the Cistercian monks of Sept-Fons (Bourbonnais, France) decided to rebuild the abbey on the site of the earlier 18C buildings. The sober and elegant building, with a warm-coloured golden stone was completed in 1948, according to the traditional Cistercian layout. The new abbey church façade overlooks the retreatants' courtyard. It has a great purity of line and is adorned with a huge Virgin and Child.
