St-André Abbey and gardens
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
A visit to the remains of the 10C Benedictine abbey of St-André at Villeneuve-les-Avignon is well worth the climb. Of the abbot's residence, there remains only the entrance pavilion, allowing us to imagine the past splendours of the abbey. The Italian and Mediterranean gardens are stunning: vaulted walkways grown over with roses, ornamental pools, fountains and statues. Tall cypress trees are dotted along the paths, which afford superb views over Avignon. Deckchairs are available should you wish to savour the view.
