The Michelin Guide's review
The gorge dug by the River Yantra provides a superb setting for the Monastery of the Transfiguration. Restored circa 1850 (by Dimitar Sofijaliata, then Kolju Ficeto), the church is famous for its murals painted by Zahari Zograf, in particular, The Wheel of Life. The dark interior contains a fine iconostasis carved by masters of the Tryavna school and an icon representing St Andrew by Stanislas Dospevski.
