The Michelin Guide's review
During the First World War, this hill was cut in two by the frontline between the Marne and Verdun and was the scene of bitter fighting between French and German troops who launched a "mine war" that obliterated the hill, as witnessed by the impressive 30m-deep mine craters. A museum built on the site of the destroyed village displays documents and objects discovered here. Guided visits of the underground tunnels (barracks, toilet blocks, storerooms etc) are available to visitors.
