The third largest lake in Sweden, Lake Mälaren stretches from west to east as far as Stockholm, where it flows into the Baltic. Comprising meandering branches separated by islands and peninsulas, it is fronted by small picturesque towns as well as several historical properties, ranging from sumptuous royal castles (Grönsö, Skokloster and Gripsholm) to more modest mansions. Among all these splendours, the Anundshög funerary site is particularly impressive.
