Founded in 1916 to study and protect the province's indigenous flora, the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden is a teaching and learning institution. It boasts a catalogue of 50 000 plants from 5 000 distinct types, as well as an impressive collection of 400 sorts of rhododendrons and its no less impressive collection of some 130 maple trees.
