The Michelin Guide's review
Upstream of River Usuki, the 60 majestic Buddhas, sculpted into the cliff face between the 9C and the 12C, exude a timeless quality. National treasures, they are dotted over four sites, reached up steps. The first, Furuzono, is home to the most impressive carving, depicting the 3m/10ft-high Dainichi Nyorai surrounded by his disciples. The second and third sites, Hoki, contain 40 statues including several Amitabh. The last, Sannousan, has 3 statues, one of which of Kakurejizo, 5m/16 ft high.
