The Michelin Guide's review
Urnes is a remote little village with Norway's oldest - and one of its finest - stave churches. It dates from the 12C and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its remarkable portal is decorated with sculpted dragons and snakes. Inside, the columns and capitals are richly embellished with sculptures of animals, human forms, dragons and centaurs. The fine Baroque altarpiece depicts the Crucifixion.
