The Uji region is famous for its green tea plantations and its magnificent temple of the Phoenix, Byodo-in, which is moreover depicted on all 10 yen coins and also a Unesco Site. The temple's central hall, Hoo-do, provides a superb setting for the National Treasure of the statue of the Amida Buddha (11C). Surrounding this masterpiece are nine paintings depicting this same Buddha descending from Western Paradise. Finally, there is a museum, built in 2000, packed with works of art.
