The Michelin Guide's review
From its rocky perch 130ft above treacherous Lake Superior, sturdy Split Rock Lighthouse (1910) blinked its warning for nearly 60 years. Accessible only by water until 1924, the lighthouse required an elaborate system of derricks and tramways to construct and provision it, remnants of which remain today. Stop in the history center for exhibits and an introductory film, then descend 171 steps to the beach below.
