The Michelin Guide's review
Built between 1565 and 1598 and restored in the late 19C, the Basílica Metropolitana de Santiago el Mayor de España has a composite ochre stone façade. Once you have stepped through the neo-Renaissance entrance portal, you come into an interior, the plainness of which offsets the elaborate main retable (17C). The cathedral boasts works by G Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos and Baroque altars in the side chapels. A sculpted marble tomb is the final resting place of the founder of Tunja, Gonzalo Suárez Rendón.
