The Michelin Guide's review
This park is situated on the site where members of the westward-emigrating Donner Party spent the fateful winter of 1846-47. In late July, the party of 87 people, pioneering families who joined the Great Westward Migration of the mid-1840s, set out on an untried route, a shortcut said to save 350mi, but early snows trapped them in the Sierras. As the winter wore on, starvation took its toll. Survivors were forced to resort to cannibalize the dead in order to survive. Only 47 people survived the ordeal.
