The Michelin Guide's review
Built in the mid-12C, this is one of the oldest stave churches that you can still see today. The chancel, apse and exterior gallery were demolished in the 19C and only the nave and aisles remain today. The west and south portals are magnificently decorated with sculpted motifs depicting interlaced animals. The vault is particularly remarkable: it is covered with paintings from 1260 showing Christ with six apostles on either side, and scenes from the life of St Margaret.
