The Michelin Guide's review
The work of architect Diogo de Arruda between 1510 and 1513, this is the most striking example of the Manueline style anywhere in Portugal. From the roots of a cork-oak, supported by the bust of a captain, springs forth a twisting decoration that climbs up to the left and right in a riot of foliate and marine detail. Crowning it all are the emblems of Manuel I and the Cross of the Order of Christ. Other decorative motifs represent orders of chivalry.
