Tokyo's National Museum of Modern Art presents a good summary of Japanese art from the Meiji period up to the 1980s. Of the 9 000 works in its collection, 300 are on display at any one time. A few artists deserve a special mention: Tomioka Tessai (1836-1924), Yorozu Tetsugoro (1885-1927), Kishida Ryusei (1891-1929) and Kitaoka Fumio (1918-2007).
