Meiji-jingu
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
At this shrine, Meiji-jingu, are the venerated and deified souls of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. It was built following a public fund-raising campaign and 130 000 trees were donated by the Japanese. Destroyed during the war, an exact replica was rebuilt in 1958. Visitors access the sacred area through a majestic gate hewn out of a centuries-old cypress tree, but have a look around the lush Gyoen garden first.
