The Michelin Guide's review
Enjoying national park status, the peninsula of Ise is most renowned for its Ise-jingu Shrine, the most sacred building in Japanese Shintoism. It is home to other historical sites, such as the two married rocks of Meoto-iwa. The city of Toba is famous for its "ama": fisherwomen who dive without breathing equipment, and its pearl farms. Further south lies Ago Bay with its stunning jagged coast and islands, creeks and headlands.
