Excavations at Himera
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in 648 BC by colonists from Zancle, Himera was the scene of the defeat of the Carthaginians at the hands of the soldiers of Agrigente and Syracuse allies for once... But the Carthaginians were angry. On their return to the island in 408, they recaptured the town and razed it to the ground. Some remains of the former city have come to light on this site such as the temple of Victory and the archaeological artefacts are on show in an antiquarium.
