The Michelin Guide's review
Ek-Balam hasn't revealed all its secrets. The most interesting discovery dates from 1999, when Mexican archaeologists unearthed the façade of a temple - halfway up a structure known as the Acropolis, with a wild and luxuriant stucco decor around the mouth of a giant jaguar with fangs. The broad volutes, plumed figures resembling "angels" at the corners, grotesques, and an aquatic frieze under the jaw. This unbridled "Baroque" Mayan art is very different from the style in nearby Chichén Itzá.
