Kasbah Museum (Dar el-Makhzen)
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This "Museum of Mediterranean Cultures" is housed in the former sultan's palace, founded during the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), shortly after the English were driven from Tangier (1684). It was considerably expanded in the mid-18C and twice more in the 19C. Be sure to see the Bayt al-Mal (Treasury), a masterpiece of elegance, the Dar al-Boukharil, the main courtyard, Riad as Sultan, a superb Arab-Andalusian garden, and, among other artefacts, the fine Roman mosaic The Voyage of Venus.
