The Michelin Guide's review
This dramatic, 5,979ft-long bridge ranks as the fifth-largest suspension bridge in the world. Hovering 188ft above the Narrows, a narrow water passage in southeastern Puget Sound, it boasts a center span measuring 2,800ft in length. The bridge's predecessor was the star-crossed and now legendary "Galloping Gertie," so named for the way it swayed in the wind. Opened in 1940, Gertie lasted only four months before it collapsed. Today's rendition has spanned the Narrows since 1950.
