The Michelin Guide's review
The gate guarded by two impressive stone soldiers was built to mark the repression carried out by Horthy's white guards after the defeat of the Council Republic headed by Béla Kun. Two other monuments on Arad Martyrs Square - the name recalls the 13 Hungarian generals executed by the Austrians in 1849 - serve as a reminder of the struggle against the Habsburgs: a statue of Ferenc II Rákóczi and a memorial column to the Szoreg battle victims.
