Within the canal that surrounds the historic city, the centre of Suzhou, in its western districts, away from the main thoroughfares, retains its aspect of "Venice of the East", as Marco Polo dubbed it. Around Pingjiang lua - an unspoilt alleyway in Old Suzhou that runs alongside a canal - as well as in the 70 or so gardens, life unfolds at a different pace.
