The Michelin Guide's review
This old city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, has been turned into an historical park in which some of its buildings, previously buried under a mass of vegetation, have been restored or rebuilt. At the heart of the park, the royal city, surrounded by triple concentric walls, is home to the major monuments, such as the Wat Mahatat, placed in the centre of the city in accordance with Brahminical cosmogony. The vestiges of the city are reflected in the many lakes carpeted in lotus flowers, endowing the site with a romantic charm.
