The Michelin Guide's review
The best way to take in the breathtaking sight of this red sandstone sea stack (137m) is from the ferry crossing between Stromness and Scrabster. The boat passes near Hoy (which means "High Island"), enabling passengers to enjoy the sight of this unusual rock rising out of the choppy waters. The Old Man against the backdrop of the sheer cliffs of St John's Head (347m) is a truly impressive sight.
