The Michelin Guide's review
Climbing up the crater of Stromboli, one of the few active volcanoes in the world, is a unique and unforgettable experience, although strictly regulated and only possible with a guide. The crater consists of a cluster of five mouths. A few hundred metres away, you can observe the regular spray of incandescent lapilli, which is accompanied by noisy explosions, a sight that will make you forget the fatigue of the climb (lovely views) or the imminent return journey. The eruptions are especially spectacular at night: go up the volcano in the late afternoon and take a torch.
