The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in 1147 by David I, this Augustine monastery became one of the most prosperous and influential. Most of its abbots were famous statesmen. The proximity of Stirling guaranteed it royal protection. The vestiges feature a secluded 13C steeple, 80ft/24m high; when restored in the 19C, the double-gabled roof and terrace were replaced. Only the foundations now remain of the original monastic buildings.
