The Michelin Guide's review
Inaugurated in 1891, this renowned institution, nicknamed The Farm, sprawls over 8,000 acres/3,300ha and its world-class research facilities are associated with some 22 Nobel and 5 Pulitzer prize winners. In 1885, after the death of his only son at 15 from typhoid fever, Leland Stanford, railroad tycoon, decided to found the institution in his memory. The main quadrangle, the church famous for its 7,777 organ pipes, Hoover Tower and the Cantor Arts Center all enhance the prestige of this private research institute.
