The Michelin Guide's review
Stams Cistercian Abbey, or Zisterzienstift, founded in 1273, has two elegant 17C Baroque towers with onion domes. Visitors entering the church will notice the Rose Grille, a wrought-iron masterpiece from 1716, then the balustrade of the nave, under which the Tyrolean sovereign princes lie. But the interior is dominated by the high altar, with its exceptional altarpiece depicting the Tree of Life. St Bernard's ceremonial hall and the museum, which presents a selection of precious items, are also worth seeing.
