The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in the 9C, this abbey nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque era" by André Malraux was rebuilt in the 11C. The monastic buildings are more recent (17C), but the rest of the abbey church is original. A beautiful blend of harmony and simplicity, it is striking in terms of its sheer size (76m long with a 31m-long transept and a 77m spire). This Romanesque structure houses a remarkable 11C series of Biblical paintings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
