The Michelin Guide's review
In the heart of the Chartreuse range, these wooded gorges are dominated by huge limestone ridges to which fir trees cling in the most haphazard manner. The famous "Desert Route" bordered the Carthusian monastery's estate in the 16C. The striking impression created by this landscape was related by Chateaubriand, Lamartine and Alexandre Dumas senior, who all took this route.
