The Michelin Guide's review
Salona was a major town in Roman times, home to 60 000 inhabitants at the era of Diocletian, and its ruins are particularly impressive. The healthy economy and cosmopolitan character of the city encouraged Christianity to flourish here from the 2C. The site now comprises the necropolis of Manastirine, built in memory of the victims of Diocletian's persecutions; the museum of Tusculum; the ramparts and the eastern town with an old Episcopal centre; and a superb amphitheatre (c. 170).
