Soweto Towers
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Soweto's inhabitants have re-appropriated these two cooling towers which were originally part of a power station. From the 1950s onwards, the towers dominated the township's landscape but without distributing any electricity to them, which was reserved for their white neighbours. Following the end of apartheid, the towers have become a place of memorial, with one of them adorned with street art commemorating leading figures from Soweto and South Africa. A lift enables visitors to get to the top.
