The Michelin Guide's review
For safety reasons, tourists are strongly advised to avoid this region. A crossroads between Thailand, Laos and Burma, Sop Ruak is well worth a visit for its views of the legendary Mekong. Situated at the heart of the Golden Triangle, with its reputation for drug trafficking, the village is home to the Opium Museum, where visitors can find plenty of information on this illicit substance, including its history, manufacturing process and trade. Sop Ruak is also a starting point for those keen on following the course of the Mekong either by road or, better still, by boat.
