The Michelin Guide's review
Dominating the Solo plain from 900m above sea level and the last stronghold of Hinduism in Central Java, Candi Sukuh (15C) was devoted to the worship of a mysterious hero. This break with orthodox Shivaism explains the unusual iconography, such as the phallic symbols, the large altars shaped like flat tortoises, and the outer bas-relief decoration depicting Bima and Sadewa, the heroes of the Indian Mahabharata in purely Javanese episodes. Six kilometres away is Tawangmangu Waterfall.
