The imposing walls of Agios Ioannis Theologos - St John the Theologian Monastery - dominate the white town, the island of Patmos and the surrounding archipelago. You enter via a narrow 12C gate with a bell gable. Paved with black pebbles, the central courtyard forms a narrow square, its left flank embellished by the elegant arcades of the church gallery painted with 17C and 19C frescoes. The gallery gives onto the katholikon, the oldest part of the monastery. The museum is worth visiting.
